Bluebonnet Season

It is that time of year again – springtime! The sun is shining, everything is green, and bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, blanket roadsides and parks.

The Museum has its own field of bluebonnets in the work by Julian Onderdonk, Untitled (Field of Bluebonnets). Onderdonk was an artist from Texas who enjoyed painting outdoors and studying light and shadow in nature. He is often called “the father of Texas painting.”

I am not from Texas, but I think that the tradition of taking family photos surrounded by this happy, blue flower is so much fun!

If you don’t live near a field of bluebonnets, you can have a fun afternoon making your own springtime flowers. From tissue paper to popcorn, here are some ideas to get started on your own flower creations.

There is no need to have a big collection of paintbrushes to paint a colorful garden; the tools may be growing in your own backyard! Angel Bug Baby has directions and photos to show you how to use “fuzzy weeds” to create textured flowers.

Make bluebonnets that really ‘pop’ with paint, glue, and popcorn. Check out Texas Crafts for Kids on eHow to discover several Texas-themed craft ideas.
