Hop on in to the Center for Creative Connections Art Studio this month to make your own Alice in Wonderland-inspired hat! As many of you are probably aware, Disney’s new movie based on the Lewis Carroll classic premieres this coming weekend, and we are mad as hatters with anticipation. To celebrate the event, our March Studio Creations theme will be hats. What kind of hat would you design for yourself if you were a character in the story?
If you haven’t heard of Studio Creations before, it’s a drop-in art making activity for families offered on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Each month features a different project connected to works of art from the Museum’s collection or special exhibition. Instructions for the activity are provided, and volunteers are on hand to help you with your creation.
We encourage you to see the works of art the project is based on before beginning your project—it really makes the experience much more enriching. Have a youngster new to art or unsure of how to begin engaging your children with art? Try one of our Studio Creations Gallery Guides! Highlighting the featured works of art for the month, they have fun, interactive questions and activities for you and your family to enjoy in the galleries. Not only are they a good warm-up for the art activity, they offer different approaches to looking at art together that you can apply to your future visits.
This month’s Gallery Guide takes you on a scavenger hunt through the Museum to look at hats in different works of art; see if you can find others along the way! Gallery Guides are available in the Art Studio on weekends before and during Studio Creations.
Check back for updates on next month’s activity, photos of people’s creations, bonus information, and more!
